Boveneinde (Kootwijkerduinen)
Near the village of Kootwijk and close to Nieuw Millingen is a sand dune area
that is similair to the Kootwijkerzand but it's located a few kilometers to the north of it. It may be a smaller area but it's still interresting none the less.
If you've ever travelled by train in the netherlands between the stations of Apeldoorn and Amersfoort you may have seen it from looking out the window. The area is right behind the track and visible on the left side when travelling in the direction of Amersoort just a few minutes after Apeldoorn station. It's close Barneveld as well.
The area is still quite big, it's located next to the A1 motorway, between exits 17 and 18. It is easy to find, there's a car...

After a break for a year I decided it was time for another video. In the summer vacation of 2023 I visited the Utrechtse Heuvelrug for the first time. So with a patch base i can transfer patches to Mac/ipad and then transfer it to other FM volcas?

    • @dykodesigns
      @dykodesigns 2 месяца назад

      Yes and no. It depends on the Model of Volca FM. With the original model from 2016 you can only transfer from Patchbase into to the Volca FM via midi (only goes one way as the original model had no midi out so you couldn't export patches via midi), with the Volca FM2 from 2021 (that has the 6 voice polyphony) it can go both ways because the newer model has both midi in and out ports. Patchbase only supports Sysex transfers though.

      Hi, sorry I don't if I have much information unfortunately, other then that I know from a book that Starlift had installed some lifts in indonesia as that was a market for them in the 1930's. In the Netherlands the early Starlift equipment is mostly lost to time, and is not really documented or preserved (in the east of the netherlands it's pretty much non-existant but in cities like The Hague it may be different). The Starlift-Voorburg installation from the 70's are getting increasingly rare too. Maybe some dedicated elevator historians could help you with more specific information. The book that I have only briefly mentions that they some buisiness in Indonesia at that time.

    I have one YD380B 1736B00W from 1990. Mine have a red led instead of green. It reads fine 360K. I formated and wrote data and all went good. I don't have any 360K drive to test if floppy works on a true DD drive. If i try to format a disk, and don't specify any parameter to the format command, it will try to format DD disks as HD, i need to manually specify 360K format. The disk still format as HD, but alots of bad sectors appeared. But if my memory serves me well i got a DD disk formated as HD without any bad sectors, but i need to confirm this.

    • @dykodesigns

      Yes, that’s more or less what I did. The disc is is easier to get off then it looks, it’s mostly friction fit. Sometimes it is fixed with tiny bit of glue, but it’s fairly easy to overcome without damaging it. I have done this many times, never damaged one so far. These joysticks are rock solid.

    Thank you. What I am trying to understand, is if it is possible to record a track using Korg Gadget, and then get it to MIDI control my Waldorf Iridium keyboard, so that I can record it in Logic Pro X. I thought that maybe by muting all the other tracks, other than the one I will record each time. Can you explain if this is possible, and if so, how can I achieve it?

    • @dykodesigns
      @dykodesigns 4 месяца назад

      You can certainly do this, with the Taipei Gadget as it's a Midi input/output Module. Since I've made this video I've built a permanent setup with a few Volca's and a midi keyboard (Emu X-Board 49) in combination with a midi-thru box and an audio Interface connected to the iPad. The Taipei gadget accepts midi input from any connected midi device and it can also output to any connected midi device. It is important that Gadget's midi setting is set to "Advanced" mode. I've done several projects this way by combining the internal instruments from Gadget with hardware synths, all sequenced from Gadget. When the arrangement is completed, I export the midi tracks and import them in Cubasis (or Cubase on my PC) to record the audio of the hardware synths. In most cases it's a combination of the audio stems from gadget's own internal instruments with the all the midi tracks. You can use multiple instances of Taipei within Gadget like any other instrument gadget, so it's quite flexible. This is why advanced mode is important, it allows you have it work like a tradional DAW/midi seqencer.

    Hello @Dykodesigns. I've just install the old familial DUAL 1224. But that one won't start. When I pull off the big metallic plate to check what's inside, I can see the "poulie" turning when I push start. Any idea why the plate don't turn ? Possible the "poulie" is too old ? And how restore that ?

    • @dykodesigns
      @dykodesigns 4 месяца назад

      The poulie needs to make contact with the inner part of the platter. It's a idlerwheel/rim drive mechanism. Basically the motor shaft transfers it's motion to the poulie (the idler wheel) which then needs to make contact with the inside of the platter. It's possible that the poulie doesn't reach far enough, failing to make contact. All of the parts transfer their motion by friction. So if the the poulie is worn or if it can't get in position properly it fails to work. The Poulie itself can move in a horizontal position, but also vertically to select between the two speeds (33 and 45 rpm). The motor shaft is slightly stepped to enable the two speeds.

    The problems came from backward compatibility with the SMS, limiting bandwidth and colors to 15 per plane, or 61 onscreen. Money spent on the Z80, 8KB of RAM and chips could've been used for a 12MHz 68000, capable of driving an audio CD-ROM in the Sega CD, as well as the full 128KB of VRAM and larger color palette. That would've cost $300 to make in 1989, but the games wouldve been only $1 to make, and SEGA wouldnt have suffered from the Sega CD, 32X, Mars, Jupiter, Neptune fiasco. Attachment rates were 7-10 games, but you have to have 15-20 games in stores per console, so SEGA had to have about $500 in inventory per customer. Starting with a C-2 with a CD-ROM, that amount would be $400, and the machine could've handled perfect arcade ports and sold far more units.

    This game was not DOS4GW (32bit) game, so it did not utilize memory above basic 640 kB. I remember the pain we had (my friends and me) trying to run this game in 1991. You had to absolutely tune out CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to great detail to free up enough memory to get it to run. I thin kwe got to some 635 kB free ram becuase we loaded everything possible into EMS and XMS (these are the upper blocks of memory inside the 1st MB of ram). So if you have 8 MB of ram, it did you no good to run this game. you had to play with the lower 640 kB. I had a 386 DX back then, which I had to explain to my father how I NEED 386DX (and not 286 or 386SX) because I will do some "math stuff" on it. 386DX (40 MHz) was expensive back then. Above it was only 486, and DX was the (I think) the data bus size for the 387 FPU (floating point processor unit). If you didnt have 387 FPU, then all the math in the program was done in integers (or simulated real numbers), and because of that it could not be high fidelity. But with 387 FPU you had access to 80-bit floating point calculations ... if you are a programmer, you know that FPU 80-bit registers are much better even than double (64bit) float precision, which is twice as good as 32bit normal float precision. Still the game ran in 20bit DOS addressing mode, and even if you have FPU, it ran in 32bit float precision (I suspect, I never saw the code, unlike the Falcon 4 code - which as I saw, still has remnants of falcon 3 code inside).

    Thanks for the video. I bought the exact same drive (YD-380B-1736) thinking it would work in my IBM PC 5150 (8086). I understood that BIOS support for high-density drives wasn't added until the IBM AT (80286), so I did not expect it to be able to handle 720KB or 1.2MB disks, which is fine since I only have double-density (360KB) disks. What I learned from your video, though, is that the YD-380B will not work as a 360KB drive without special BIOS support for "double-stepping" the head, which of course my 5150 lacks. Maybe those confusing forum posts were by people who had the same problem as me and for them it was true: the YD-380B does not support 360KB disks.

    • @dykodesigns
      @dykodesigns 9 месяцев назад

      It's typical IBM to invent such solution, the double stepping behaviour in the BIOS is one of their clever "hacks" to make it work, something that the PC clone industry copied in order to be compatible with IBM's design. Back in the day many people wrote 360KB disks on those 1.2MB drives (myself included as I didn't know any better). Reading those 360KB disks written on 1.2MB drives I my experience works as long it's beeing read by another 1.2MB drive (provided the drive is good condtion). In the late 90's I had a Laser 286 with a Chinon 1.2MB drive, I was able to read 360KB disks that I written on that drive with my YE-Data drive suscessfully so many years later. The real issue is that the tracks are too fine for a real 360KB drive, IBM offered such drive as an optional extra on the AT for data exchange with XT users.

    Your video was informative. I have a YD-380 1736 (slightly later model) which has the DSKCHG signal instead of READY on Pin 34 and does not seem to have any jumpers to change this. I want to use this drive on an old S-100 system (1981 vintage) because it's characteristics mostly emulate an old Shugart drive (360 rpm, MFM etc.). My problem is, this later version of the YD-380 only seems to have the DSKCHG signal available as required for the PC AT computers. I need the READY signal to satisfy the WD1793 based drive controller board. Do you have any experience hacking a READY signal from the signals that do exist on the later YD-380? Others have suggested using/patching the MTRON and/or DS signals, isolated by diodes to do this but I am looking for some feedback on this idea.

      @dykodesigns 10 месяцев назад

      It’s a long time ago, there was a problem with the cycling of the mechanism. It’s a common fault on these Dual turntables. I did manage to sort of fix that (it has to do with wear of pin that rides in the cam gear). However there where more problems, the tone arm lift had some shenanigans too. That’s the point where I gave up on the repair attempt as I didn’t feel disassembling that. Repairing these mechanisms is difficult and I have not attempted it since. I should have brought it too a specialised repair shop but never got round to it as I bought a different (and better specced model) shortly after.

    Hi Dyko, I have just bought a Competition Pro on the local vintage fair and it is the same type that you have in the video. These don't have a retainer ring at the end of the shaft and the round plastic part which actuates the switches prevents the plastic base plate (the round plastic part which holds the microswitches) to come off from the shaft. Do you have any idea how to remove the shaft from these joysticks? I would like to completely disassemble it to inspect the rubber dampening or maybe replace it with a spring for quicker action.

    This keyboard was my first foray into something semi professional. Filter cutoff for both oscilators can be changed in real time externally via midi CC. Sounds have limited edibility and I later found a WK4 Plus, same rom sounds but large LCD and full editing - can have sounds made of 3x 2osc layers, multi step envelopes. Even the WX2 has great filters though, can start with a slap bass and dial up the resonance till it self oscillates and muck with the cuttoff, can turn slap bass into a very realistic alarm sound. Super cool. Anyway great to see some WX2 content on RUclips :) I'd love to find one of their S series from back then. Not many in Australia where I am sadly.

    Does it seem to me or does the PC version run at much slower framerate?

      You can use any midi interface that works with an iPad and any app that supports midi. I've sucessfully used the Korg Plugkey interface with the WX2. A good app to try is the Peter Vogel Instruments Fairlight CMI app, other good apps are iWavestation and iM1 from Korg, but Garageband should also work well.

    I have wx2 plus and wk8se, among the best vintage keyboards, a pity is the defect of the buffer batteries that release acid. Luckily I made sure they didn't damage them. However they still work wonderfully !!! Thank you for your video.

    Hoi. Mag ik je vragen welke batterij je hebt gebruikt? Waar kan ik die bestellen (type nr. etc.) en wat heb ik nog meer nodig voor de modificatie zoals je die hebt doorgevoerd? Heb je batterij zo vervangen of moet het moederbord onder spanning worden gehouden, dus overbruggen? Alvast bedankt. De video is verder een mooie duidelijke uiteenzetting👍. P.S., er liggen 2 losse platte kabelstrips met stekker binnen in het keyboard. Die zullen ws alleen een functie hebben voor iets optioneels?

      De batterij is een Nedis BANM160SC3 Nikkel-Metaalhydride-Accu (3,6 V 80 mAh). Het moederbord hoeft niet onder spanning gehouden te worden, want alles sounds zitten in een ROM. De instellingen moeten wel opnieuw ingesteld worden. De modificatie is heel eenvoudig, we hebben de batterij los met 2 draadjes verbonden en elders in de behuizing op een printje geplaatst in plaats van deze weer op het moederboard te plaatsen om schade door batterij lekkages te voorkomen. De twee bandkabels zijn als ik het goed herinner voor een optionele videokaart.

      @@dykodesigns super bedankt🙏. Hier ga ik eens lekker mee aan de slag. Alles eens uit elkaar halen en schoonmaken. De led lampjes van de knoppen doen het ook niet maar ze functioneren wel. En daarna eens op zoek naar een Gem S2R. Die heb ik spijtig genoeg ooit eens verkocht. Hartelijke groet en nogmaals bedankt. Ad
